Election Commission Clarifies Misinformation Regarding Voter Lists Publication

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has refuted false claims about not publishing voter lists on its official website. In an official statement released by the Election Commission, it was clarified that the news suggesting the non-publication of voter lists on the Election Commission’s website is inaccurate. The correct procedure for obtaining voter lists is clearly outlined in the Election Act and Election Rules.

According to the Election Commission, there is no legal obligation to upload voter lists on the website. The method for obtaining the final voter lists, whether in soft or hard copy, is detailed within the Election Act and Rules. The Commission emphasized that uploading voter lists on the website is not a legal requirement.

Voter lists contain personal data of voters, and allowing unrestricted access to such information on the website could lead to misuse by organizations working against the state’s interests. The Election Commission highlighted the importance of safeguarding this data from potential cyber threats.

To facilitate the public in verifying their information and other details, the Election Commission has provided a service where citizens can send an SMS to 8300 from their mobile phones. This service enables individuals to check their registration status and other pertinent details. The emphasis on securing data against cyber attacks is also part of this initiative.

The Election Commission emphasized that voter lists are prepared under the Joint Electorate system according to the law. These lists are not created based on any religious criteria, and any candidate or other individual can obtain copies of voter lists according to the prescribed procedure.

The Election Commission’s clarification aims to dispel misinformation regarding the publication of voter lists on its website. The Commission underscores the legal processes outlined in the Election Act and Rules for obtaining voter lists and emphasizes the importance of protecting voters’ personal data from unauthorized use. The provision of a mobile service for citizens to check their registration details reflects the Election Commission’s commitment to transparency and data security.
