Unprecedented incidents of political figures’ associates being taken into custody ahead of 2024 elections.

Former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s lawyer, Amir Saeed Raan, was reportedly apprehended by unidentified individuals in Gujranwala while filing nomination papers for the upcoming general elections in 2024. The detainment has raised concerns, with Raan’s brother, Adam Saeed, urging authorities for his swift recovery. This incident follows a similar occurrence 10 months ago when Raan was abducted but later rescued in Islamabad by the inspector general of Islamabad police on court orders.

In a separate incident, former Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhary’s brother, Faraz Chaudhary, faced arrest in Jhelum while attempting to submit nomination papers on behalf of Fawad for NA-60. The Jhelum police cited multiple pending cases against Faraz, the former general secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the region. Fawad Chaudhary, currently detained, recently expressed his intent to contest the elections and sought permission to handle nomination paper matters from within the jail through a local court in Islamabad.
