Maryam Nawaz Threatens Legal Action Over Punjab Corruption Claims

Maryam Nawaz defamation notice

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced plans to issue a Maryam Nawaz defamation notice to federal minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain over his allegations of corruption in the province. Challenging the minister to provide evidence, she warned that she would take legal action if he failed to substantiate his claims.

Speaking at a ceremony in Attock on Tuesday, Maryam questioned why Salik continued to serve in the federal government if he believed Punjab’s administration was involved in widespread corruption. She insisted that allegations should be supported by evidence rather than made through public statements.

The exchange has brought tensions between the Punjab chief minister and the federal minister into the spotlight, with both maintaining their positions on the controversy.

Maryam Challenges Salik to Provide Evidence

Addressing the allegations, Maryam said Salik was a federal minister and should present proof to support his accusations.

She made it clear that she would pursue the matter through the courts if he could not provide evidence. Her proposed Maryam Nawaz defamation notice represents a legal challenge to the minister’s public remarks about corruption in Punjab.

The chief minister also questioned the minister’s continued participation in the federal government while criticising the provincial administration.

Maryam argued that if Salik considered the Punjab government corrupt, he should explain why he remained part of the same political setup at the federal level.

Her comments reflected the growing disagreement between the two political figures, despite their parties’ cooperation within the broader government arrangement.

Dispute Over Gujrat Deputy Commissioner Appointment

Maryam also connected Salik’s criticism to the appointment of the deputy commissioner in Gujrat.

According to the chief minister, the minister was unhappy because an officer he preferred had not been appointed to the district. She rejected the suggestion that official postings should be influenced by political recommendations.

Maryam maintained that appointments in Punjab were being made on merit and argued that accepting recommendations for administrative positions could damage governance and public institutions.

She suggested that government officers should be selected according to professional considerations rather than the preferences of influential political figures.

However, Salik later rejected her account of the matter, saying he had not requested the appointment of a particular deputy commissioner.

The disagreement over the Gujrat posting has therefore become another point of contention between the two officials.

Maryam Recalls Conditions During Parvez Elahi’s Government

During her remarks, Maryam also referred to Salik’s positive comments about the administration of former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi.

She recalled visiting Gujrat during a period of heavy rainfall and described the water accumulation she witnessed in the area. According to Maryam, the water was so deep that her vehicle nearly became submerged.

By bringing up the incident, she challenged the minister’s favourable assessment of the previous provincial administration.

Her comments added another political dimension to the dispute, moving the discussion beyond the corruption allegations and into comparisons between past and present provincial governance.

Salik Hussain Stands by Corruption Allegations

Responding to Maryam’s statements, Chaudhry Salik Hussain refused to withdraw his allegations.

The federal minister said he stood by his earlier remarks and maintained that corruption was taking place in Punjab.

He also rejected the chief minister’s claim that his criticism was connected to the appointment of the Gujrat deputy commissioner.

Salik said he had made no request for a particular officer to be appointed and pointed out that an official was already serving in the position.

His response directly challenged the explanation offered by Maryam and indicated that the disagreement was unlikely to end with the chief minister’s announcement of legal action.

Salik additionally commented that individuals holding positions of authority should remain humble. He said he had responded truthfully to the issue.

Legal Threat Adds to Political Tensions

The proposed Maryam Nawaz defamation notice has raised the possibility of a legal confrontation between two figures who are part of the wider political alliance supporting the federal government.

At the centre of the dispute are two competing positions: Maryam is demanding evidence for the corruption allegations, while Salik insists that his claims are valid and that his criticism has nothing to do with administrative appointments.

Whether the matter proceeds to court will depend on the next steps taken by the chief minister and the federal minister.

Neither side appears willing to back down. Maryam has challenged Salik to substantiate his accusations, while the minister has publicly reaffirmed them.

The controversy also highlights the importance of accountability and evidence when public officials make allegations against government institutions. Any legal proceedings or further statements could determine how the dispute develops in the coming days.
