In a recent development, the caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, has taken the decision to remove Texas-based Pakistani-American businessman Muhammad Tahir Javed from his position as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM). This decision, as per the PM Office’s notification, reverses the appointment notification of Javed as the SAPM, a role initially assigned to him on October 6.
Sources indicate that the move to revoke Javed’s appointment came about following lobbying efforts by a group of American-Pakistanis. The Establishment Division, with the Prime Minister’s approval, has officially withdrawn the appointment notification for Javed as the special assistant.
It’s worth noting that upon his appointment, Muhammad Tahir Javed was reported to have received perks and privileges equivalent to those of a minister of state. This raised questions, as he had previously supported and campaigned for Imran Khan and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the United States when Imran Khan was in office.
Muhammad Tahir Javed identifies himself as a Pakistani-American entrepreneur, investor, business magnate, and philanthropist on his social media profiles. However, in recent months, he has become a vocal critic of Imran Khan, describing the former PM as a failure whose claim to fame rests solely on his celebrity status as a cricketer.
In a recent interview, Javed expressed disappointment in Imran Khan, asserting that he campaigned vigorously for him during Imran’s visit to the USA in November 2019, only to find him untrustworthy and lacking substance, plans, and vision.
It’s worth noting that during Imran Khan’s time in power, Javed had publicly praised him for a “successful” US visit and for addressing critical issues. Javed also claimed to have arranged meetings between Imran Khan and over 63 US Senators during the visit, although PTI officials contend that he managed to secure meetings with only three Senators, while the rest were facilitated by the embassy and the government.
Muhammad Tahir Javed’s journey is noteworthy, as he moved to the US from Toba Tek Singh in Pakistan with just $500 and, through dedication and hard work, became a successful businessman. However, his past includes a legal issue in Texas, where he was sentenced to serve five years of deferred probation for felony theft dating back to September 1990. He ultimately served only half of that term.
After completing his probation, Javed shifted his focus to business endeavors, with the assistance of his brother, and established several companies. In 2018, he ran for the US Primary Elections to represent Texas District 29 in Congress but lost to the incumbent Democrat candidate.
Records from Texas Jefferson County’s District Criminal Court detail Javed’s felony theft case, providing insights into the specific charges and proceedings related to the offense.
