SC rejects plea for immediate meeting with Imran Khan

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition seeking permission for an immediate meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.

A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan heard 13 petitions concerning Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. During the proceedings, the court dismissed a request filed by senior PTI leader Latif Khosa, observing that such relief could not be granted without first issuing notice to the government.

Chief Justice Afridi said the petition must overcome maintainability objections before any order could be passed. The court subsequently issued a notice to the government, directing it to respond on Tuesday.

The apex court also heard the government’s appeals challenging the acquittal of Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case, ordering the formation of a three-judge bench to take up the matter.

Additionally, the court reviewed Imran Khan’s appeals related to the Official Secrets Act case and a National Accountability Bureau reference concerning the Al-Qadir University Trust. However, his bail plea in the Al-Qadir Trust case was dismissed as infructuous.

Separately, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi rejected a PTI petition seeking permission for Imran Khan to be examined by his personal doctors at Adyala Jail. The plea requested access for Dr Asim Yousaf, Dr Khurram Mirza and Dr Samina Niazi to conduct a medical examination.

During the hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Zaheer Shah opposed the request, arguing that Imran Khan is an accused in the May 9 GHQ attack case and currently on bail, not an under-trial prisoner — grounds on which the court dismissed the petition.
