Mastung markets ordered to close early over security threats

Amid heightened security concerns following recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan, authorities have directed shopkeepers in Mastung to shut markets by 4pm each day. According to ARY News, the decision was taken after district police assessed a potential security threat in the area.

Police officials said the directive will remain in force until further notice, adding that commercial centres will be allowed to operate only for limited hours as a precautionary measure. Market unions and trader representatives have been formally informed about the early-closure orders to ensure compliance.

The trader community has voiced serious concerns over the situation, saying the restricted business hours are hurting livelihoods and daily commerce. Traders have urged authorities to put foolproof security arrangements in place so markets can function normally without risking public safety. Residents have also reported difficulties due to reduced market hours, affecting access to essential goods.

The decision comes in the aftermath of a major wave of coordinated terrorist attacks across multiple districts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Gwadar, Mastung, Noshki, Dalbandin, Kharan and Pasni. The attacks involved gunmen and suicide bombers, triggering a large-scale security response.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said on Sunday that Pakistani security forces eliminated 145 terrorists during counterterrorism operations following the attacks. Speaking at a press conference in Quetta, Bugti said intelligence reports had earlier warned of preparations for such assaults, and security forces responded with bravery and professionalism.

The chief minister expressed solidarity with the families of those martyred in the attacks, saying the government stands with them in their grief. He also assured that the welfare and upbringing of the martyrs’ children would be the responsibility of the state.
