PTI rejects top five talks a phrase that now defines the latest twist in Pakistan’s ongoing political crisis. On Tuesday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan firmly dismissed the federal government’s proposal to hold a meeting involving the country’s so-called top five figures to break the political deadlock. His remarks made it clear that PTI sees no value in high-level talks that exclude the party’s jailed founder, Imran Khan.
The proposal for engagement among the top five figures was recently highlighted by Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, who stressed the importance of trust-building and sustained contact at the highest level of leadership. However, PTI rejects top five talks outright, arguing that such a process is neither practical nor meaningful under the current circumstances.
PTI’s Clear Rejection of the Proposal
Speaking to the media at the Dahgal checkpoint near Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan stated that if negotiations have reached a stage where only a handful of powerful individuals are expected to meet, it should be considered a clear no.According to him, there is neither a need nor a justification for such a meeting.
Gohar emphasized that PTI has never officially withdrawn from negotiations. Instead, the party questions the logic of dialogue that sidelines its most central figure. This stance reinforces why PTI rejects top five talks, as the party believes meaningful negotiations cannot take place without direct involvement of Imran Khan.
Imran Khan’s Absence at the Center of the Dispute
Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023, remains at the heart of PTI’s political strategy. Facing multiple cases since his removal from office in April 2022 through a no-confidence motion, Khan has not met party leaders for more than a month, according to PTI officials.
Barrister Gohar expressed frustration, saying that PTI representatives visit every Tuesday but return without meeting the party founder. He alleged that even routine meetings with Khan have been deliberately turned into controversies. This situation, PTI argues, makes any proposal for elite-level talks meaningless, further explaining why PTI rejects top five talks as a viable solution.
PTI Leadership Echoes the Same Concerns
PTI Secretary General Barrister Salman Akram Raja also urged the government to clarify what it truly means by talks among the country’s top leadership. He stated that dialogue without Imran Khan’s participation would yield zero results, regardless of how many influential figures sit at the table.
Similarly, senior PTI leader Barrister Ali Zafar described the current environment as unconducive for negotiations. He alleged that cases were being filed against PTI leaders and that party workers were facing harassment and torture. According to him, confidence-building measures must come first if any dialogue is to succeed.
These statements collectively reinforce the party’s position and explain why PTI rejects top five talks until what it sees as political victimisation ends.
Government’s Perspective on the Stalemate
On the other side, PML-N leaders maintain that dialogue remains possible, but only if PTI changes its confrontational approach. Senator Rana Sanaullah warned that PTI and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government could face consequences if Imran Khan continued to confront state institutions.
He claimed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended the dialogue offer after consulting both the establishment and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif. However, he also pointed out that, based on past behavior, the PTI founder has rarely shown willingness to engage in talks.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif added that discussions about negotiations have so far remained limited to media statements, with no progress on serious talks. He clarified that the government has no objection to any opposition figure, including Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leading negotiations if formally nominated.
A Political Crisis with No Easy Exit
Despite these assurances, PTI rejects top five talks because it views the proposal as symbolic rather than substantive. For PTI, the core issue is access to its founder and an end to what it calls politically motivated cases. Without addressing these concerns, the party believes high-level meetings will serve no real purpose.
The current standoff highlights Pakistan’s deep political polarization. While the government emphasizes trust-building among top leaders, PTI insists that genuine dialogue must include Imran Khan and be conducted in an atmosphere free of pressure and intimidation.
