PTI Pushes for Achakzai Opposition Leader Appointment

PTI Pushes for Achakzai

The demand for Achakzai opposition leader appointment has once again taken center stage in Pakistan’s parliamentary politics as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) renewed its call for immediate notification of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. PTI leaders insist that all constitutional, legal, and procedural objections raised earlier have now been fully resolved, leaving no justification for further delay.

PTI Reiterates Its Demand

On Monday, PTI Chief Whip Aamir Dogar publicly reaffirmed the party’s position following a meeting with National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Dogar clarified that the engagement was not a backchannel contact but a formal and transparent interaction aimed at repeating PTI’s longstanding demand. According to him, the Achakzai opposition leader nomination was communicated clearly, with supporting documents already submitted to the National Assembly Secretariat.

PTI formally nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai after the party was compelled to replace its opposition leadership in both houses of parliament. This reshuffle followed the removal of Omar Ayub as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and Shibli Faraz from the Senate opposition leadership due to convictions related to the May 9 cases.

Legal Hurdles Addressed

Aamir Dogar emphasized that the speaker was informed about the withdrawal of all pending cases that had earlier created procedural complications. In particular, the petition filed by Omar Ayub Khan in the Peshawar High Court naming the National Assembly as a party has been withdrawn. This step, PTI argues, removes the last remaining legal obstacle to the Achakzai opposition leader appointment.

Dogar stressed that there is now no pending court case directly or indirectly linked to the opposition leader’s slot. He urged the speaker to act swiftly, noting that further delays could undermine parliamentary norms and democratic continuity.

Nomination Backed by Party Leadership

PTI maintains that Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s nomination carries full political legitimacy. Dogar stated that the decision was made by the PTI founder and unanimously endorsed by the party leadership. This, he said, leaves no ambiguity about the candidate’s standing or the party’s unity on the matter.

The Achakzai opposition leader demand, according to PTI, is not just a political request but a constitutional necessity to ensure effective opposition representation in the National Assembly.

Speaker’s Position and Procedure

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, meanwhile, has taken a cautious stance. He reiterated that every step in appointing the Leader of the Opposition would be carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, the law, and parliamentary rules. The speaker added that the House would be informed of developments during the next National Assembly session and confirmed that the appointment process would be restarted.

While this assurance offered some optimism, PTI leaders remain firm that all requirements have already been met and that procedural caution should not turn into unnecessary obstruction.

Verification and Parliamentary Rules

One of the issues previously raised by the National Assembly Secretariat involved the verification of signatures of PTI lawmakers supporting the nomination. Addressing this, Dogar said PTI MNAs are fully prepared to appear before the speaker or any authorized forum to verify their identities and signatures if formally required.

He reiterated that PTI has nothing to hide and is willing to comply with any lawful procedure to finalize the Achakzai opposition leader appointment.

Timeline of Correspondence

The appointment process has seen repeated correspondence between PTI and the National Assembly Secretariat. The Secretariat sought written clarification regarding Omar Ayub Khan’s court cases multiple times, including letters sent on November 19, December 5, December 19, and December 29, 2025.

PTI responded to each query and formally submitted its latest reply on January 1, urging the speaker to issue the notification without further delay. Senior party figures, including PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, personally visited Parliament House and submitted the required documents to the Legislation Secretary.

Political Significance

The Achakzai opposition leader issue is significant beyond procedural formalities. The absence of a formally notified opposition leader weakens parliamentary oversight and disrupts the balance essential for a functioning democracy. PTI argues that timely resolution would restore institutional normalcy and allow the opposition to perform its constitutional role effectively.

As the National Assembly session approaches, political observers are closely watching how swiftly the speaker moves on the matter. PTI leaders have expressed hope that, following the speaker’s return from an official visit abroad, the notification will finally be issued.

The debate highlights broader questions about parliamentary procedures, political trust, and the importance of uninterrupted opposition representation. Whether the Achakzai opposition leader appointment is finalized soon may set an important precedent for future parliamentary transitions in Pakistan.
