Bangladeshi fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has received strong backing from legendary Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhtar, who believes the young speedster has the potential to surpass his long-standing record for the fastest delivery in international cricket.
Akhtar holds the record for the quickest ball ever bowled, clocking 161.3 kmph during the 2003 World Cup match against England — a mark that has remained unbeaten for over two decades.
Now 50, Akhtar is in Bangladesh for the first time as a mentor with Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Dhaka Capitals. Expressing his excitement, the former Pakistan great said he had long heard positive things about the league and was eager to contribute.
“I’ve never been part of the BPL before, but I’ve heard that it’s doing great. Finally, I had the opportunity to come here and be a part of it. I want to pass on whatever I’ve learned, especially about fast bowling, motivate the players, give them a few tricks to win matches, and elevate their mindset,” Akhtar said.
With Taskin Ahmed part of the Dhaka Capitals setup, Akhtar sees a direct opportunity to mentor one of Bangladesh’s most promising pacers.
“I want Taskin to break my speed record,” Akhtar said, expressing confidence in the bowler’s ability.
The former speedster also praised Nahid Rana, highlighting him as another exciting fast-bowling prospect in Bangladesh.
“I have seen that in Taskin. He looks sharp, focused, and in great rhythm. And so is Nahid Rana,” Akhtar added.
Akhtar emphasized the importance of structured training and mental strength, noting that he would share his experience and training secrets whenever possible.
“If he trains properly and maintains the right attitude towards life, it will reflect on the field. That mindset is the most important thing,” he said.
The 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League is scheduled to begin on December 26, with Sylhet Titans facing Rajshahi Warriors at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
