Rumors about so-called plastic eggs being sold in Pakistani markets have sparked public anxiety, with many people claiming that unusual yolk colors, rubbery textures, or bouncy boiled eggs are proof of counterfeit products.
Addressing the controversy on ARY Digital’s morning show Good Morning Pakistan, Punjab Food Authority (PFA) representative Mohsin Bhatti clarified that these claims are false and misleading.
Bhatti explained that the changes in egg texture or color are not due to plastic but are a result of extended cold storage.
“During the summer, the demand for eggs declines, but poultry farms continue producing them. To manage surplus stock, producers store eggs in cold facilities for months,” he said.
This long storage period can make the egg white and yolk slightly elastic, causing some people to mistake them for artificial or plastic eggs.
He further emphasized that:
- Plastic cannot be boiled or fried, nor can it be turned into an omelette.
- Textural changes occur naturally—just like fruit or vegetables that become different in taste and consistency over time.
Bhatti reassured the public that no plastic eggs are being sold in the market, and the eggs available to consumers are safe, real, and compliant with food standards.
The Punjab Food Authority urged citizens to avoid spreading misinformation and rely on verified sources for food safety concerns.
