The Auditor General of Pakistan has revealed that the country has discovered a total of 1,234 million barrels of oil reserves to date, of which nearly 80 percent has already been consumed.
Provincial data shows that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa currently holds 94.24 million barrels of remaining oil reserves, Sindh 78.98 million barrels, Punjab 74.23 million barrels, and Balochistan just 1.6 million barrels.
At present, Pakistan’s production capacity stands at 60,000 barrels per day. Energy experts believe this figure can be significantly boosted through fresh discoveries. To accelerate exploration, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) is engaging international companies to invest in Pakistan’s oil and gas sector.
Despite depleting reserves, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that Pakistan still holds 9.1 billion barrels of untapped oil resources. However, demand is projected to rise sharply—from 2.23 billion barrels in 2030 to 3.35 billion barrels—underscoring the urgency of new exploration initiatives.
Officials emphasize that tapping into fresh reserves with international assistance could transform Pakistan’s economy, ensuring long-term energy security and reducing reliance on costly imports.
New Oil Discovery in Sindh
Earlier, the Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced a significant oil discovery at the Chakrun-1 exploratory well in the Chakar–one Oil Field, Tando Allah Yar, Sindh.
According to OGDCL, the drilling—conducted under the Tando Allah Yar Exploration License—began on June 2, 2025, and reached a depth of 1,926 meters into the Upper Shale of the Lower Goru Formation. OGDCL holds a 95% operating interest in the project, with Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) holding the remaining 5%.
Following analysis of wireline logs and Reservoir Evaluation Services (RES) data, a Drill Stem Test (DST) was carried out in the B-Sand formation, followed by testing with an Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP). The well demonstrated a flow rate of 275 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead flowing pressure of 400 psi.
