Pakistan railways enforces strict brake power checks to prevent accidents.

Following a series of train accidents in recent months, Pakistan Railways has enforced strict safety regulations requiring all passenger and freight trains—including services such as the Awam Express—to operate under the “Railway Work to Rules – Brake Powers” protocol. The directive will be implemented with rigorous enforcement procedures.

Engineering staff must now verify and certify that the brake power of every coach and wagon is functioning at 100%. Any train, coach, or wagon failing to meet this standard will be detached immediately and barred from departure.

An official circular issued by Chief Operating Superintendent Syeda Maryam Gilani has been distributed to all divisional superintendents and the technical branch to ensure compliance.

Under the new rules, staff must adhere to four key guidelines:

  1. Braking materials of each coach and wagon must be fully updated.
  2. Brake power must be tested in advance of every departure.
  3. A train fitness certificate can only be issued after successful testing.
  4. Strict detachment of any non-compliant coach or wagon is mandatory.

These measures aim to safeguard passengers’ lives, improve the safety and reliability of railway operations, and ensure punctual services across the network.
