Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the critical role of overseas Pakistanis in strengthening the country’s economy and foreign exchange reserves, acknowledging their contributions on the occasion of the International Day of Family Remittances.
In his message, the Prime Minister stated, “Today, Pakistan joins the global community in observing a day that honours the efforts of migrant workers whose remittances uplift millions of families and contribute to national development.”
He emphasised that remittances from Pakistanis abroad have long been a cornerstone of the national economy. “With over 9 million Pakistanis living overseas—primarily in the Gulf, Europe, and North America—our diaspora remains deeply rooted in their homeland. Their financial contributions represent both love for their families and a key source of economic resilience.”
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the Pakistani diaspora, calling their remittances “a reflection of trust, commitment, and generational responsibility.”
He reiterated the government’s dedication to attracting foreign investment and growing exports to ensure sustainable economic stability. In this journey, he noted, remittances have played a vital role.
“In the current fiscal year, remittances reached a record $34.9 billion—a 28.8% increase from the previous year. In May 2025 alone, $3.7 billion was received, marking a 13.7% rise compared to May last year,” he shared. These figures, he said, are a testament to the diaspora’s hard work and growing confidence in the government’s economic policies.
“This trust strengthens our determination to revive and grow the economy,” he concluded, urging for a united effort among the government, diaspora, and development partners to overcome economic challenges and usher in a new era of investment and progress.
