Pakistan urges UN involvement amid rising India-Pakistan tensions.

Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday to discuss the regional security situation.

According to a statement from Pakistan’s UN Mission, the conversation centered on the evolving security dynamics in South Asia, with particular emphasis on the need for de-escalation and ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain peace. Ambassador Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability.

Earlier in the day, during a UN press briefing, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric was asked if the Secretary-General planned to visit India and Pakistan in light of the growing tensions. Dujarric noted that Guterres had offered his mediation services in recent calls with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, following a recent armed attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir. However, he clarified that a visit would only be considered if both nations accepted the UN chief’s offer of good offices.

In response to a question about India’s alleged threats to apply a Gaza-style model to Kashmir, Dujarric reiterated that the Secretary-General had promptly engaged both sides and continued to offer diplomatic support for peaceful resolution.
