Opener Shadman Islam struck a career-best 120 to put Bangladesh in a strong position on Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Chattogram. Bangladesh ended the day at 291-7, leading by 64 runs with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16*) and Taijul Islam (5*) unbeaten at the crease.
Shadman laid the foundation with a 118-run opening stand alongside Anamul Haque, who scored 39 in his return to Test cricket after three years. This partnership marked only the 10th century stand by Bangladesh’s openers in Test history.
However, the middle order failed to build on the solid start. Mominul Haque (33) and Mushfiqur Rahim (40) both got starts but couldn’t convert. Mushfiqur, continuing a lean patch, was run out for the 12th consecutive innings without a fifty.
Bangladesh, once well placed at 259-3, suffered a mini-collapse, losing four wickets for just 20 runs. Zimbabwe debutant Vincent Masekesa impressed with figures of 3-44, claiming the scalps of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and debutant Jaker Ali.
Earlier, Zimbabwe were bowled out on their overnight total of 227, with Taijul Islam wrapping up the innings on the first ball of Day 2. He finished with a brilliant 6-60, while off-spinner Nayeem Hasan took 2-42.
Zimbabwe lead the two-match series 1-0, having won the first Test in Sylhet by three wickets.
