‘Minecraft’ breaks records as 2025 top hollywood hit, surpasses $550M worldwide.

Just two weeks into its theatrical run, A Minecraft Movie has become the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025.

The Warner Bros. adaptation of the globally popular video game continued its winning streak with an $80.6 million second weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Its worldwide total has now topped $550 million.

After smashing expectations with a $300 million global debut, A Minecraft Movie has proven to be the year’s biggest box office magnet. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film experienced just a 50% drop in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada — a strong performance after such a massive opening.

Despite lukewarm reviews from critics (46% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a “B+” CinemaScore from audiences, the movie has struck a chord with fans, capitalizing on the growing appetite for high-budget video game adaptations.

With a reported $150 million production budget, split between Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, Minecraft has helped reinvigorate cinemas after a slow start to the year. Comscore reports that overall weekend ticket sales doubled compared to the same weekend in 2024. Before the film’s release, the 2025 box office lagged 11% behind last year — now, it’s nearly caught up. However, revenue still trails 2019’s pre-pandemic levels by 31%.

While no new release came close to Minecraft’s dominance, several exceeded expectations:

  • The King of Kings — An animated film depicting the life of Jesus, opened in second place with $19.1 million from 3,200 locations. Featuring voice talent from Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, and Uma Thurman, the film earned a glowing “A+” CinemaScore and is well-positioned ahead of Easter.
  • The Amateur — This CIA revenge thriller starring Rami Malek took in $15 million domestically and another $17.2 million internationally. Made on a $60 million budget, the film received mixed reviews, with some calling it an awkward fit for Malek despite his role as producer.
  • Warfare — Directed by Alex Garland and co-directed by Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, this A24 film pulled in $8.3 million from 2,670 theaters. Critics praised it for its realistic portrayal of combat, based on Mendoza’s 2006 Iraq War mission.
  • Drop — A low-budget thriller from Blumhouse, earned $7.5 million. The film, starring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar, follows a woman terrorized by mysterious phone messages on a first date. It premiered at SXSW and was produced for under $10 million.
