Sindh has confirmed its first mpox case, with health authorities stating that the patient, a 29-year-old male from District Malir, had no recent travel history. The diagnosis has raised concerns about possible local transmission.
The Sindh health department’s spokesperson, Meeran Yousuf, confirmed the case in a statement on March 22, 2025. “The patient’s symptoms began on March 15, and he is currently in isolation at a public hospital,” Yousuf said. Contact tracing is underway to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed.
Pakistan has reported eight mpox cases in 2024 and five this year, including recent locally transmitted cases in Peshawar. While the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency in 2024 over a mutated strain of mpox, named clade I, Pakistan has not detected any cases of the new strain.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to stay cautious and follow hygiene protocols to prevent the virus’s spread.
