The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to stick with its youth-focused policy, ignoring criticism over the recent underwhelming performances of young players. The board officials remain confident that nurturing new talent is the key to Pakistan’s long-term success in T20 cricket.
Backing Young Talent Despite Poor Performance
A high-level meeting was recently held in Lahore, where the performance of the national team was analyzed. According to sources, officials acknowledged that Pakistan is far behind modern cricket standards, especially in the T20 format. The discussion emphasized that only fearless youngsters with exceptional fielding skills should be given consistent opportunities in T20 internationals.
This approach led to the inclusion of new faces in the squad for the New Zealand tour. Although these players have not yet delivered standout performances, officials believe they need more time and exposure to develop into match-winners.
Saim Ayub also struggled initially but was given multiple chances, and he eventually proved his abilities. The same trust should be placed in other youngsters as well,a source revealed.
No Return to the Old Selection Policy
The meeting participants agreed that PCB should not revert to its old selection policy out of fear of defeats. Officials stressed that even with senior players, the team had been losing matches. Therefore, investing in youthful talent is a more sustainable approach for long-term success.
With consistent backing and proper development, the young core could form a strong T20 squad by the 2026 T20 World Cup.
IIf we continue with this policy, we will have a solid, experienced team by 2026,”sources added.
Expanding Opportunities for Young Cricketers
In an earlier meeting, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi directed the International Cricket Department to arrange more foreign tours for the Pakistan Shaheens and U-19 teams. The goal is to:
Expose young players to different playing conditions
Help them gain experience in competitive environments
Develop adaptability for major international tournaments
Currently, efforts are underway to schedule these tours, which will help bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket.
Hosting International Junior Teams in Pakistan
PCB also plans to invite junior teams from different countries to Pakistan. This will allow local talent to compete against quality opposition on home soil, enhancing their:
Game awareness
Tactical understanding
Match temperament
This initiative is expected to elevate the standard of youth cricket in Pakistan and prepare a strong pipeline of players for the senior national team.
Developing a Modern Training Program
Another key agenda discussed was the introduction of a modern training program for emerging cricketers. This program aims to:
Improve fitness and fielding standards
Develop power-hitting skills
Enhance mental toughness and game awareness
PCB officials believe that traditional training methods need to be upgraded to match the demands of modern cricket. By implementing advanced training techniques, Pakistan’s young cricketers can compete at the highest level with greater confidence.
A Step Toward a Stronger Future
Despite recent disappointments, PCB is committed to building a fearless T20 squad. While the transition phase may be challenging, experts believe that sticking to this youth policy will benefit Pakistan cricket in the long run.
With:
More foreign exposure
Consistent opportunities for youngsters
A modern training system
Pakistan could soon close the gap with the world’s top T20 teams and become a force to reckon with in international cricket.
For now, the PCB remains firm—young players will continue to get their chances, and the future of Pakistan cricket will be built on bold, fearless, and talented cricketers.
