U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he would rather deal with a Liberal-led Canadian government than a Conservative one, saying he has no preference over the election outcome.
Trump, who has taken a tough stance against Canada by imposing tariffs and even suggesting it could become the 51st U.S. state, made these remarks during an interview on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle. When host Laura Ingraham suggested that his policies might help the ruling Liberals win, Trump dismissed any concerns.
“I don’t care,” he said. “I think it’s easier to deal with a liberal. Maybe they’re going to win, but it doesn’t matter to me at all.”
He also criticized Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, calling him “no friend of mine” for making negative remarks about him.
The Liberals, in power since 2015 under Justin Trudeau, were previously trailing in polls but have gained ground after replacing Trudeau with former central banker Mark Carney. Recent surveys indicate a tightening race, with some even showing the Liberals ahead.
The party has drawn comparisons between Poilievre and Trump, portraying him as a right-wing populist. A Liberal campaign ad accused Poilievre of aligning with Trump’s ideology, particularly citing his support for an anti-government movement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Poilievre has centered his campaign around the “Canada First” slogan, addressing economic concerns such as the rising cost of living and the housing crisis.
The Conservative Party has yet to respond to these developments, while the election is set to take place by October 20, with the possibility of an earlier vote.
