PIMS becomes first government hospital in Pakistan to introduce modular operation theatres.

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has become the first government medical facility in the country to establish modular operation theatres, enhancing its surgical capabilities with state-of-the-art medical technology.

According to the Ministry of Health, a total of seven modular operation theatres have been set up at PIMS, featuring advanced sterilization units, wireless cameras for precision, and audio-video recording systems for real-time monitoring. The Rs1.4 billion project was funded to upgrade the hospital’s infrastructure, with the modular theatres imported from Germany.

Key features of the new operation theatres include:

  • Relocatable design for easy movement within the facility.
  • Backup battery system to ensure uninterrupted surgeries during power outages.
  • Temperature-controlled system for medical gases, maintaining optimal conditions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to inaugurate the modular operation theatres later this week.

Established in 1985, PIMS consists of three semi-autonomous hospitals:

  1. Islamabad Hospital (IH) – a 592-bed facility spread over 3.5 hectares.
  2. Children’s Hospital – a 230-bed hospital covering 1.6 hectares, specializing in pediatric care.
  3. Maternal & Child Health Care Center – a 125-bed facility focused on obstetrics and gynecology.

This landmark development is expected to significantly enhance Pakistan’s public healthcare system, providing modernized surgical care to patients at PIMS.
