The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has officially extended the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree program from four years to five years, bringing the country’s dental education in line with international standards.
Starting from the 2024-25 academic session, the fifth year of the BDS program will focus on clerkship, followed by a mandatory one-year house job. This revision aims to enhance the practical training and clinical competence of future dental professionals.
The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Lahore had already adopted the five-year program, and now all universities across Pakistan are required to implement the new curriculum.
This decision reflects PMDC’s commitment to upgrading the quality of dental education and ensuring Pakistani graduates meet global benchmarks in the field.
