As more cricketers opt for lucrative franchise contracts over international duty, Australian spinner Adam Zampa remains focused on representing his country. Zampa, who will play his 100th ODI against England at Trent Bridge on Thursday, acknowledges the growing appeal of franchise cricket but insists his heart is set on winning more matches for Australia.
Despite waning interest in the 50-over format and criticism of the current series for lacking context, Zampa still values the opportunity to don the green-and-gold. “Playing for your country is still the priority,” he stated, expressing his belief in the future of ODI cricket.
With 169 wickets, Zampa ranks as Australia’s second-highest ODI spin wicket-taker, behind Shane Warne. He has become a crucial figure in Australia’s white-ball teams, leading the wicket charts at last year’s 50-over World Cup and helping Australia to their T20 World Cup title in 2021.
Though he recently helped the Oval Invincibles win The Hundred franchise league, Zampa insists international victories hold a special significance. “It hits different when you play for your country,” he said, reaffirming his drive to win more World Cups for Australia.
