Girona’s bid for second place dented by late alaves equalizer.

Girona’s aspirations of securing the runners-up position behind La Liga champions Real Madrid suffered a setback on Friday as a late goal from Alaves’s Jon Guridi in the ninth minute of added time forced them to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Eric Garcia provided an early lead for Girona, finding the net just four minutes into the game at the Mendizorroza stadium in Vitoria. However, Alaves responded swiftly, with Guridi leveling the score eight minutes later.

Although Artem Dovbyk, the league’s top scorer with 20 goals, didn’t find the net himself, his assist to Yangel Herrera a minute before halftime appeared to secure victory for Girona.

But deep into added time, Guridi struck again to salvage a point for Alaves.

Following the draw, Girona now sits at 75 points, trailing Madrid by 12 points and holding just a two-point lead over their Catalan rivals Barcelona.

Barcelona, who are set to play on Monday, have the opportunity to leapfrog Girona into second place if they defeat Real Sociedad, who are still vying for a Europa League spot.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, fresh off their Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, are set to face relegation-threatened Granada on Saturday. Granada could potentially face relegation even before kickoff if Real Mallorca, currently 17th, secure a victory against Las Palmas earlier in the day.
