Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has forecasted that Karachi will continue to experience cold and dry weather until Monday, March 4.
Following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Friday, Karachi was enveloped by a cold wave, resulting in a significant drop in temperatures across the city.
Areas such as II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, Sarjani Town, Malir, North Karachi, Korangi Industrial Area, Orangi Town, Baldia Town, Manghopir, Northern Bypass, and Sohrab Goth Town witnessed heavy rain.
Sarfaraz noted that the mercury in Karachi plummeted by 4°C, with the metropolis recording a minimum temperature of 14.5°C on Saturday. He further mentioned that the maximum temperature expected for the day would be around 22°C. This cold spell is unusual for March, as such chilly weather is not typical during this time of year, he added.
The chief meteorologist highlighted that the lowest temperature ever recorded in Karachi occurred on March 7, 8, and 9 in 1979, dipping to 7°C.
Weather expert Jawad Memon stated that Karachi is unlikely to experience further rainfall, as the westerly waves have moved away. He forecasted clear and dry skies with cold nights ahead.
While acknowledging the temporary nature of the unseasonal cold in Karachi, Memon mentioned that winds from Quetta would persist for a few days, possibly reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.
Memon also reported that the Clifton private weather station recorded up to 50.4 millimeters of rain, causing flooding in adjacent areas, particularly DHA Khyaban-e-Shehbaz. Despite this, drainage efforts have yet to commence in affected areas.
