Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf has decided to convene a session of the National Assembly on February 29.
According to sources, Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf has chaired a crucial meeting to convene a session of the National Assembly. The session has been called in accordance with Article 91, Clause 2 of the Constitution.
The decision to convene the session was made after consultations with officials from the National Assembly Secretariat and constitutional experts. The situation arising from the President’s refusal to sign the summary for convening the session was also taken into consideration.
The National Assembly Secretariat also consulted with the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Law and Justice regarding the convening of the session.
During the briefing in the session, the Speaker was informed that there is no legal impediment to convening the session by February 29, in accordance with the Constitution.
According to constitutional experts, the President’s refusal to sign the summary does not pose any obstacle to the demand for a session of the Assembly. The President’s authority to convene a session arises 21 days after the election, and February 29 falls within this period.
On the other hand, it has been reported that President Arif Alvi has rejected the summary for convening the National Assembly session and has sent it back.
According to sources, President Arif Alvi has taken the stance that the seats for women and minorities should be filled first.
It is noteworthy that under Article 91, Clause 2, it is mandatory to convene a session within 21 days after the election, and February 29 falls within this period.
