The crux of the issue revolved around the election date. The Election Commission recommended February 11 as the date for the general elections. In contrast, President Arif Alvi pressed for holding the elections on February 4, immediately after the completion of the electoral process.

Nawaz Sharif, addressing the attendees, expressed his determination to empower the country’s institutions and ensure justice and accountability. He emphasized the significance of robust institutions in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding democratic values.

Khawaja Asif’s statement raises questions about the individuals and organizations involved in the protest, as well as their motives and intentions. He questioned the extent of influence and authority General Faiz Hamid possessed, suggesting that individuals connected to the sit-in protest had affiliations with the government.

During the hearing led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, a three-member bench, including Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan and Justice Atar Minallah, raised several questions. The Chief Justice inquired about the whereabouts of Mr. Abusar Alam, to which Attorney General Mansoor Awan responded that Alam was reportedly traveling.

He stated that there are restrictions on freedom of expression and any unlawful activity will be subject to legal consequences. The legislation is the prerogative of the Parliament, and no one is above the law.

The Attorney General’s report emphasizes that the Fact-Finding Committee has been constituted to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision of February 6, 2019, and investigate the events surrounding the Faizabad sit-in.
