Iran has strongly reaffirmed its position on the Golan Heights, saying the occupied territory remains an inseparable part of Syria and rejecting recent statements by Israeli officials regarding its future. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said claims of permanent Israeli control cannot change what it considers the territory’s historical and legal status.
Iran Rejects Israeli Claims
The latest statement from Tehran followed remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who reportedly said that the Golan Heights would remain under Israeli control indefinitely. Iran strongly criticized the statement and described Israel’s policies toward the territory as part of a broader pattern of occupation.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry argued that no unilateral declaration can alter the legal status of territory under occupation. It maintained that the Golan Heights belong to Syria and that questions concerning sovereignty should be addressed according to international law and established principles of territorial integrity.
The issue remains highly sensitive because the Golan Heights has been at the center of regional tensions for decades. Israel captured the territory from Syria during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and later extended its domestic law to the area in 1981, a move that was widely rejected internationally.
Tehran Defends Syria’s Territorial Integrity
Iran’s latest comments reflect its longstanding opposition to Israel’s control over the Golan Heights. Tehran says occupation and what it describes as colonial policies cannot permanently change the identity or legal status of disputed territory.
The ministry emphasized that Syria’s territorial integrity must be respected. It also argued that recognition of sovereignty resulting from what it considers an unlawful occupation could undermine important principles of international relations.
The statement comes amid continued diplomatic tensions across the Middle East. Regional disputes involving Israel, Syria and the Palestinians remain closely connected to wider questions about borders, sovereignty and the future of occupied territories.
For Iran, the Golan Heights is not simply a territorial dispute. The issue is also linked to broader concerns about international law and the principle that states should not acquire territory through force.
Iran Criticizes Colombia’s Position
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also criticized Colombia over its reported recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Tehran described the move as inconsistent with the UN Charter and international law.
Iran argued that recognizing the consequences of what it regards as an unlawful act could violate the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity. It further suggested that such recognition could potentially create international responsibility for the Colombian government.
The criticism highlights how the status of the Golan Heights continues to generate diplomatic disagreements far beyond the immediate region. Different countries have taken different positions on Israel’s control of the territory, making the issue an ongoing subject of international debate.
For Tehran, however, the position remains clear: sovereignty over the territory cannot be changed simply through political declarations or recognition by individual states.
Palestinian Statehood Also Raised
Iran’s statement did not focus solely on Syria. The ministry also criticized Netanyahu’s opposition to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
Tehran said Palestinians have the right to determine their own political future and that Israeli policies cannot remove the legal rights of the Palestinian people. Iran connected the two issues through its broader argument that occupation should not be allowed to permanently determine the political future of a territory or population.
The comments come at a time when the Palestinian question remains one of the most contentious issues in international diplomacy. Discussions over Palestinian statehood, territorial control and regional security continue to influence relations between Middle Eastern countries and the wider international community.
A Long-Running Territorial Dispute
The Golan Heights has strategic importance because of its location overlooking parts of northern Israel and southern Syria. Its elevated terrain also gives it significant military and geographic value.
Israel has maintained control of the territory for decades, while Syria continues to claim it as part of its sovereign territory. The international community has generally not recognized Israel’s annexation of the area.
Iran’s latest statement therefore represents a continuation of its established diplomatic position rather than a new policy. By emphasizing Syria’s territorial integrity, Tehran is seeking to reinforce the principle that the status of occupied territories should not be changed through unilateral action.
The dispute is likely to remain an important issue in Middle Eastern diplomacy. As regional tensions continue, statements concerning the Golan Heights demonstrate how questions of sovereignty, occupation and international recognition remain deeply connected to the wider struggle for political stability in the region.
Iran has made its position unmistakable: it considers the Golan Heights an integral part of Syria and rejects efforts to establish permanent Israeli sovereignty over the territory.
