Political Leaders’ Perspectives on Elections and Economic Stability in Pakistan

In a recent statement, Maulana Fazlur Rahman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), emphasized that holding elections is not a priority at the moment; instead, the focus should be on improving the country’s economy. He placed the responsibility for the economic downturn squarely on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that the PTI government’s philosophy is flawed. According to him, there could be someone more competent than Imran Khan, who, in his view, was unfit even before. Fazlur Rahman stressed that the final decision rests with the courts, and the ongoing cases against PTI will determine the truth.

Addressing the challenges faced by PTI, he highlighted that their alliance, known as the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), is currently inactive. Consequently, it will be the Muslim League that will decide the welcome for Nawaz Sharif, who is set to return. Furthermore, he pointed out that PTI has been striving for three and a half years for the elections.

Regarding economic matters, Fazlur Rahman criticized PTI’s management, mentioning that the PTI officials responsible for the country’s reserves, which had reached 2 billion, have led Pakistan into a quagmire. Responding to a question about PTI’s governance, he stated that criticizing PTI does not mean he endorses Nawaz Sharif. He highlighted that in the past two and a half years, PTI’s government had raised the reserves from 11 billion to 21 billion, preventing the country from defaulting.

Maulana Fazlur Rahman underscored that the responsibility to bring back the reserves from 11 billion to 21 billion lies with PTI. He also addressed a question about Imran Khan, stating that his comments do not render Imran Khan ineligible; his actions prove his incompetence.

Regarding Nawaz Sharif’s potential return and PTI’s concerns, Fazlur Rahman clarified that their support will not be based on PTI’s fear. He mentioned that the world will receive a message of Pakistan being a peaceful nation amid current terrorism. Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s statements highlight the intricate political landscape in Pakistan, where economic stability and leadership credibility are at the forefront of public discourse.
