Ben Stokes’ impressive bowling performance in the third Test against India demonstrates his renewed confidence in his fitness following a series of injuries, according to teammate Joe Root.
Stokes delivered a marathon 44 overs at Lord’s — the highest by any bowler in the match — claiming five crucial wickets and contributing scores of 44 and 33 with the bat. His all-round efforts helped England secure a tense 22-run win and a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. He was named Player of the Match.
The 34-year-old all-rounder had surgery on a torn hamstring in December and followed it with an intense physical rehabilitation programme, during which he shed 10 kilograms.
“He’s just desperate to be the man and make things happen,” former England captain Root told BBC Sport. “It was an incredible effort. I was honestly panicking that he might not make it through the match given his injury history, but he clearly trusts his body now.”
Root added, “It’s a great sign for us going forward. That’s the Ben Stokes we all know — back at his best.”
The fourth Test is scheduled to begin on July 23 at Old Trafford.
