Rishabh Pant has been named the new captain of Lucknow Super Giants, taking over the reins from KL Rahul for this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
The 27-year-old stumper-batsman was bought by Lucknow in November’s player auction for a record-breaking $3.21 million, the highest deal in the history of the IPL.
KL Rahul, who captained the franchise for its first three seasons, helped Lucknow reach the playoffs in their first two campaigns, though they fell short last season.
Pant, who previously led the Delhi Capitals for three seasons, expressed his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity. “Looking forward to a new beginning with fresh energy, having a blast, and enjoying the journey,” Pant said during a press conference in Kolkata.
Discussing his leadership approach, Pant emphasized the importance of trust and clear communication with players. “If you give confidence and trust to a player, he will achieve things beyond expectations. That’s the approach we’ll take – building trust, offering clear roles, and fostering open communication,” he said.
He also highlighted the value of a relentless attitude, stating, “A never-say-die spirit is key. Performances might vary, but the fight, effort, and commitment on the field are what truly matter.”
The IPL 2025 season is scheduled to run from March 21 to May 25, and under Pant’s captaincy, Lucknow will aim to regain their playoff spot and compete for the coveted title.
