Australia revamps test squad ahead of boxing day clash against India.

Australia has announced significant changes to their squad for the final two Tests against India, with 19-year-old opening batter Sam Konstas receiving his first call-up, while Nathan McSweeney has been dropped after a challenging series.

Pace bowler Jhye Richardson also returns to the Test fold after three years, providing depth following Josh Hazlewood’s injury. Scott Boland is likely to feature in the XI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Konstas Earns Debut Chance

Konstas, in exceptional form this season, has earned his selection after scoring twin centuries in the Sheffield Shield and a composed 73 not out against India A. He could debut in front of a packed MCG crowd, becoming Australia’s fourth-youngest Test debutant.

While selectors have not confirmed his place in the XI, chair of selectors George Bailey hinted at a desire for a dynamic approach at the top order. Konstas offers a contrasting style to McSweeney, who managed just 72 runs at an average of 14.40 in the series and struggled against India’s Jasprit Bumrah.

McSweeney’s Struggles Lead to Omission

Despite early promise, McSweeney’s performances were hampered by inexperience and tough conditions. Bailey emphasized the decision to drop McSweeney was difficult but necessary to address Australia’s top-order woes. “It’s never easy to make such calls, but we believe in Nathan’s ability and temperament. This is simply about exploring options to unsettle India,” Bailey said.

Richardson’s Long-Awaited Return

Jhye Richardson’s recall marks a significant milestone after an injury-laden three years. Known for his fiery pace and accuracy, Richardson impressed in domestic cricket and the IPL, proving his fitness with consistent performances.

Shaking Up the Top Order

Australia’s top three—Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and McSweeney—have collectively struggled against India’s attack, with averages of 12.60, 16.40, and 14.40, respectively. Captain Pat Cummins acknowledged their underperformance but praised McSweeney’s selflessness during tough moments.

Selectors hope Konstas’ attacking mindset and fresh approach can provide a spark, while retaining allrounder Beau Webster and batter Josh Inglis for strategic flexibility.

Criticism of Selection Policies

Former coach Darren Lehmann recently criticized Bailey’s close ties with players, suggesting it compromises tough decision-making. Cummins defended the selection panel, highlighting their bold calls and commitment to objective decision-making.
