Gerardo “Tata” Martino has resigned as head coach of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, according to multiple media reports. His decision follows the team’s unexpected exit from the MLS Cup Playoffs after a stunning defeat to Atlanta United in the first round.
Inter Miami, coming off a record-breaking 74-point regular season, was considered a favorite for the championship. However, they suffered a shock upset earlier this month, losing the best-of-three series to ninth-seeded Atlanta United.
Martino, who has a long history with Messi, having coached him for both Argentina and Barcelona, joined Inter Miami last year to great expectations.
While media outlets have cited “personal reasons” for his departure, further details are expected during a press conference on Friday, where Martino will appear alongside Inter Miami Managing Owner Jorge Mas.
Martino’s resignation marks a significant shift for the club, which has been in the spotlight since Messi’s arrival earlier this year.
