At least 11 people, including a woman, were killed and several others injured in a deadly attack on Thursday in the Ochat area of Kurram district, police confirmed to Geo News. The assailants targeted a convoy traveling from Parachinar to Peshawar, opening fire on the passenger vehicles. In addition to the fatalities, multiple individuals were injured, including three women, in the violent assault.
This latest attack is part of an ongoing pattern of violence that has plagued the district for several months, with frequent clashes between rival tribes and armed groups. These confrontations have already claimed dozens of lives and left the region in a state of continuous unrest.
The escalating violence has resulted in the closure of main and link roads, as well as the border with Afghanistan, severely disrupting daily life for local residents. Tribal elders have raised alarms about the worsening situation, warning that the persistent road closures are leading to a severe shortage of essential goods such as food, medicines, and fuel. They fear the closures could soon spark a full-blown humanitarian crisis in the region.
Elders from the Turi and Bangash tribes, in particular, have expressed deep concern over the lack of supplies, with reports indicating an alarming shortage of food and fuel. The ongoing suspension of 3G and 4G network services has further exacerbated the crisis, disrupting education and business activities, and leaving residents isolated.
In the wake of last month’s shooting incidents, the main Parachinar-Peshawar route and other vital transportation links have remained closed due to safety fears. This follows a series of violent incidents that continue to terrorize the region.
Earlier this year, a series of clashes between two rival tribes over a disputed piece of land claimed the lives of 60 people and left dozens more wounded. In August, the warring factions had agreed to a two-month ceasefire, but tensions have once again flared, underscoring the fragile and volatile situation in Kurram.
