South Africa stuns Australia to reach ICC women T20 world cup final.

South Africa delivered a stunning performance in Dubai, overcoming defending champions Australia to secure a place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final on Sunday.

In a thrilling display of batting, Anneke Bosch starred for the Proteas with an explosive 74 not out, propelling her team past Australia’s target and marking a historic victory for South Africa.

After restricting Australia to 134/5 in the first innings, South Africa’s top order responded decisively under the lights at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Captain Laura Wolvaardt led the charge with a solid 42 runs off 37 balls, while opening partner Tazim Brits contributed 15 runs from 15 balls.

However, it was Bosch who truly dominated the Aussie bowling attack, scoring her 74 runs off just 48 deliveries. Her aggressive innings put South Africa ahead of the required run rate, allowing the team to cruise toward victory with relative ease, even after Wolvaardt’s dismissal left 15 runs to chase.

Fittingly, it was Bosch who struck the winning runs, igniting jubilant celebrations among the South African fans in the stands.

Australia Struggles to Build Momentum

Earlier in the match, South Africa opted to bowl first and quickly made an impact, reducing Australia to a precarious 18/2. However, the experienced duo of Beth Mooney and skipper Tahlia McGrath (27 runs) steadied the ship, laying the groundwork for a competitive total. Contributions from Phoebe Litchfield (16* from 9) and Ellyse Perry (31 runs from 23 balls) helped Australia set a target that initially seemed formidable.

Ayabonga Khaka emerged as South Africa’s standout bowler, claiming 2 wickets for just 24 runs. Marizanne Kapp also shone, taking 1 wicket for 24 runs and delivering a spectacular piece of fielding to dismiss Mooney.

A Historic Upset

The victory is a significant milestone for South African women’s cricket, showcasing their growth and resilience on the global stage. With this triumph, the Proteas have set the stage for an exciting final, where they will aim to claim their first T20 World Cup title.
