Bahrain pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Australia in the opening match of the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup at Robina Stadium on Thursday. An own goal by Australian defender Harry Souttar in the 89th minute secured Bahrain’s first-ever win against Australia in seven attempts.
The Socceroos, reduced to 10 men after Kusini Yengi’s red card, appeared set for a goalless draw until Abdullah Al-Khalasi’s cross deflected off Souttar, wrongfooting goalkeeper Mat Ryan. Despite six minutes of stoppage time, Australia failed to equalize, with Mitch Duke missing a late header.
Australia dominated possession but was repeatedly frustrated by Bahrain’s disciplined defense. Coach Graham Arnold admitted it wasn’t their night, praising Bahrain’s resilience.
Next, Australia faces Indonesia in Jakarta, while Bahrain hosts Japan in Riffa. The top two teams from each group will advance to the 2026 World Cup.
