On Tuesday, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FPCCI) filed a petition with the Supreme Court (SC) against Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The FPCCI has requested a forensic audit of the IPPs and the recovery of excessive profits through amendments to their contracts.
The petition calls for the quashing of policies from 1994, 2002, and 2015 that govern the IPPs. The FPCCI argues that the government should not profit from a basic necessity like electricity and that it is the government’s responsibility to provide affordable power to citizens.
In response, Federal Minister for Power Division Awais Lagari stated that the government is currently reviewing the IPP agreements and promised that the public would soon receive positive updates on this matter.
