Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of Thailand’s Move Forward Party, emerged victorious with the most votes in the country’s 2023 general election. However, despite his electoral success, he was blocked from assuming the position of prime minister.
Furthermore, Limjaroenrat’s party found itself excluded from the governing coalition due to its advocacy for reforming Thailand’s stringent lèse-majesté laws, which prohibit any criticism of the royal family.
In an interview with FRANCE 24, Limjaroenrat emphasized that his party’s goal is to strike a balance between respecting the monarchy and upholding freedom of speech. Thailand’s lèse-majesté laws are among the strictest in the world, and the Move Forward Party seeks to address this issue while safeguarding fundamental rights in the country.
