The Lahore High Court Election Tribunal has made pivotal decisions regarding the nomination papers of political figures, most notably rejecting the nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from NA-122. In contrast, Yasmine Rashid has been granted permission to contest the elections.
Justice Tariq Nadeem, the judge at the Election Tribunal, conducted hearings on appeals against the decisions of Returning Officers during which Imran Khan’s nomination papers from NA-122 were under scrutiny. The Election Commission’s lawyer argued that Imran Khan is disqualified, and his proposer is not from NA-122. On the other hand, the lawyer representing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) opposed Imran Khan’s appeal.
While maintaining the decision of the Returning Officer, Justice Tariq Nadeem rejected Imran Khan’s appeal to overturn the rejection of his nomination papers for NA-122.
In another significant development, the Election Tribunal approved the appeal of former Punjab Health Minister Dr. Yasmin Rashid. Her nomination papers were initially rejected by the Returning Officer from NA-130, declaring the decision as void ab initio. The Election Tribunal overruled the decision of the Returning Officer, allowing Yasmin Rashid to contest the upcoming elections.
These decisions highlight the ongoing legal battles and appeals surrounding nomination papers as political parties gear up for the upcoming elections. Imran Khan’s disqualification in this specific constituency and Yasmin Rashid’s successful appeal have added complexity to the electoral landscape, setting the stage for intense political competition in the designated constituencies.
