Kashmir observes right to self-determination day amidst ongoing struggle.

On this Friday, as called for by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Kashmiris reflect on the historical significance of January 5th, 1949. It was on this day that the UN Security Council passed a resolution affirming the right of the Kashmiri people to determine their future through a UN-supervised plebiscite.

Despite the passage of over seven decades, the UN has yet to take substantial measures to implement the resolutions of August 13, 1948, and January 5, 1949. The situation in occupied Kashmir has further deteriorated since August 05, 2019, when the Narendra Modi-led Indian government revoked the special status of the territory, exacerbating the plight of the Kashmiri people.Prominent figures such as APHC Chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Aasiya Andrabi, and Nayeem Ahmed Khan are among the thousands of Kashmiris languishing in Indian jails. In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, various activities, including protest demonstrations, rallies, seminars, and other programs, are planned across all districts to bring global attention to the ongoing sufferings of the Kashmiri people in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. In Muzaffarabad, Hurriyat organizations, including Pasban-e-Hurriyat, have organized rallies at Shaheed Burhan Muzaffarwani Chowk. Participants in these rallies will march towards the UN Observer Mission Office in Muzaffarabad, highlighting the urgency of addressing the longstanding issue of Kashmir and ensuring the fulfillment of the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.
