Hollywood concluded a tumultuous 2023 with “Wonka” reclaiming the top spot at the box office, marking an overall improvement in ticket sales at $9 billion compared to 2022. Despite the absence of a true blockbuster during the New Year’s weekend, a diverse range of films like “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” “The Boys in the Boat,” and “The Color Purple” aimed to captivate audiences. “Wonka,” directed by Paul King and starring Timothée Chalamet, led the pack for the third consecutive weekend, bringing its domestic total to $142.5 million. Meanwhile, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” faced challenges, grossing $19.5 million in its second weekend. Blitz Bazawule’s adaptation, “The Color Purple,” debuted strongly, earning $18 million on Christmas and a total of $50 million through the week, marking a promising start with an “A” CinemaScore.
