For two years, a 24-year-old former Myanmar police officer, known only as Yan, risked his life by pretending loyalty to the military junta while secretly aiding the armed resistance. Fleeing the country in April, Yan revealed his clandestine activities, providing crucial intelligence, including details on military supply transport, to opposition groups. Dissatisfied after witnessing the junta’s brutal crackdown on protesters following the 2021 coup, Yan connected with opposition forces through his brother. Operating as a “watermelon” within the security forces—appearing loyal externally but supporting the ousted government internally—Yan’s covert efforts illustrate the internal dissent challenging the junta’s grip on power.
