Google has agreed to settle a $5 billion privacy lawsuit, filed in 2020, which alleged that the company spied on users utilizing the “incognito” mode in its Chrome browser and similar “private” modes in other browsers. The class-action suit claimed that Google misled users by implying their internet activities wouldn’t be tracked while in incognito mode, yet Google’s advertising technologies continued to collect data. The settlement, reached on Thursday, is pending approval by a federal judge, with terms undisclosed. The original lawsuit sought $5 billion on behalf of users who believed their privacy was compromised.
