India has registered a concerning rise in Covid-19 cases, reporting six deaths and 702 new infections, elevating the active caseload to 4,097. The spike is attributed to worries surrounding the JN.1 variant, recently identified in New Delhi. Over the past 24 hours, two deaths occurred in Maharashtra, and one each in Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, and New Delhi.
The JN.1 variant, classified as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a sub-lineage of Omicron and has been prevalent in the United States. India has documented 109 cases of JN.1, with Gujarat and Karnataka reporting the highest numbers.
Despite its high transmissibility, experts note that the symptoms associated with JN.1 are generally mild, resembling those of a common cold.
