Award-winning British designer Anabela Chan is challenging the traditional luxury of natural diamonds by creating jewelry with lab-grown gems and recycled materials. Chan, motivated by concerns over poor working conditions in diamond mines, opts for lab-grown diamonds, recycled aluminum from cans, and pearls cultivated through regenerative farming techniques in her designs. Her company has experienced strong demand since the COVID-19 pandemic, and she recently received the “Game Changer” award at the British Luxury Awards. The lab-grown jewelry market has seen a 20% annual growth, contributing to global profits of $15 billion, as more producers enter the market, driving down prices and prompting brands to differentiate through design and sustainability efforts.
