Ecuador nativity scene challenges Norms with realistic depictions of historical life.

In Quito, Ecuador, a unique nativity scene presented by the Discalced Carmelites aims to offer a realistic portrayal of historical life, challenging traditional depictions. The extensive creche, featuring around 300 pieces, includes figures from the 18th century and tells biblical stories surrounding the birth of Jesus. However, it goes beyond religious narratives to showcase daily life under Spanish colonial rule. Characters from different cultures, including Indigenous people with painted faces and feather headdresses, and Afro-descendants in French-style clothing, contribute to a diverse representation. The nativity scene adopts a yearly theme, with this year focusing on the challenges faced by women who work during Christmas to make ends meet. The display seeks to prompt reflection on societal issues such as racism, machismo, and poverty, moving beyond a conventional cultural tradition.
