Former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, has voiced apprehensions about the impartiality of the upcoming elections, asserting that the favoritism towards PML(N) and the influence of Nawaz Sharif’s legacy are making the electoral landscape contentious. In an interview with international media, Abbasi stated that ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process is pivotal, involving the collaboration of the military, judiciary, and political stakeholders to set the course right before the elections.
He emphasized that the impact of Nawaz Sharif, regarded as a political heavyweight and the darling of PML(N), is contributing to the polarized atmosphere ahead of the elections. Abbasi suggested that instead of maintaining silence, Nawaz Sharif should communicate to the public about his vision for the country and its politics. He argued that decisions about the military, judiciary, and political leadership should be made prior to the elections to ensure stability, cautioning that delaying the electoral process is not in the best interest of the nation.
Responding to a question, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi warned that forcing Imran Khan out through the courts would have negative repercussions. He maintained that if Imran Khan faces legal consequences based on facts, it should be accepted. However, if manipulated or biased cases are pursued, history and the public are unlikely to accept the outcomes.
Abbasi’s call for pre-election reforms and a collaborative effort among key institutions reflects the concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the need for transparency. As Pakistan prepares for the upcoming elections, the statements from prominent political figures underscore the challenges in maintaining a fair and inclusive electoral environment, where all stakeholders feel confident in the legitimacy of the process.
