Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, sidelined from Western concert stages due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has been named the director of Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi Theatre. The 70-year-old, also the head of St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, assumes control of Russia’s top opera and ballet institutions. Gergiev faced international exclusion after the conflict began in February 2022, resulting in his removal as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Known for his controversial support of President Vladimir Putin, Gergiev’s new role carries significant responsibility, emphasizing his commitment to contributing artistically within Russia. The appointment follows the departure of predecessor Vladimir Urin, with no specified reason provided for his resignation.
