Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Pakistan remains actively engaged in resolving ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, while praising the country’s political and military leadership for facilitating historic negotiations in Islamabad. Pakistan played a key mediating role by helping secure a two-week ceasefire on April 8, which is still holding as efforts for a permanent resolution continue.
Following the ceasefire, high-level delegations from both Washington and Tehran met in Islamabad for over 20 hours of discussions. Although no final agreement was reached, the talks marked the first direct, face-to-face engagement between the two nations in decades, signaling a major diplomatic breakthrough.
Addressing the federal cabinet, the prime minister emphasized that Pakistan successfully brought both sides to the table after nearly 47 years. He noted that the leadership worked tirelessly to make the dialogue possible, and both delegations appreciated Pakistan’s hospitality and constructive role.
The negotiations aimed to end six weeks of intense conflict that caused thousands of deaths and disrupted global energy supplies. The war began in late February with US and Israeli strikes on Iran and escalated rapidly, impacting regional stability and financial markets. Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and resolve remaining issues.
