Suzuki Motor is planning to commence electric vehicle (EV) production in India and export these EVs to Japan, according to a report by the Nikkei newspaper. This strategic move aims to establish India as Suzuki’s global hub for EV manufacturing and could see Indian-made EVs supplied to Toyota for the European market under the Toyota brand.
The production line for these EVs will be set up at a plant in the western Indian state of Gujarat, where Suzuki’s subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki, is scheduled to begin production next autumn. The EVs that Suzuki plans to export to Japan will be compact sport utility vehicles with a price range of approximately 3 million yen to 4 million yen ($20,043 to $26,724).
This expansion will also see the production line manufacturing gasoline-powered vehicles and is anticipated to reach an annual capacity of 250,000 units.
Suzuki has not officially commented on the report, and Toyota, which holds a 4.9% stake in Suzuki, has not provided an immediate response.
