National CERT Issues High-Priority Cybersecurity Alert Amid Regional Tensions.

The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued a high-priority cybersecurity advisory in Pakistan in response to escalating regional tensions.

The alert warns that hostile actors—including state-sponsored groups, hacktivists, and opportunistic cybercriminals—may exploit the situation to target sensitive government, defense, and financial systems. Expected threats include spear phishing, deepfake content, misinformation campaigns, DDoS attacks, malware, and ransomware aimed at banking and corporate networks.

The advisory also highlighted the potential for government social media accounts to be hacked, which could spread false or inflammatory information to the public.

National CERT has directed institutions to implement multi-factor authentication, enforce strict access controls, and ensure timely installation of system updates and security patches. Officials and citizens were also urged to exercise caution when interacting with suspicious links, attachments, or unverified applications.

The advisory emphasizes continuous monitoring, threat-hunting exercises, and regular security audits to prevent breaches. Experts warned that deepfakes and manipulated content could be used in psychological operations, increasing risks of social and digital disruption.

Recent incidents in Pakistan, including hacking attempts on media channels and websites, underscore the growing threat, briefly disrupting services in some cases. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has additionally cautioned the public against sharing unverified or misleading information online, noting such content could heighten cyber risks during sensitive periods.

Cybersecurity specialists stress that vigilance and proactive defense measures are crucial in the current volatile geopolitical environment to safeguard national digital infrastructure and maintain public trust.
